THE decision all of you were waiting for has been finally taken. There will be no reseat. That’s what the “academic committee of experts” from Cambridge decided. However, the leaks happened, There is no denials about that. Hence the solution is as follows :
Adjust the Marking scheme so that every student is treated equally.
This will mainly affect physics paper2 and paper 4. It has been said that most of the question are “low ability” question, except for some 5 questions. It is emphasized that the “higher ability” questions were untainted these experts said that these question were sufficient to make the difference between the students.
Note that it has been decided that the leaks for maths and chemistry were negligible. Hence normal correction will take place for these.
So, first of all, i would like to wish a happy holiday to all Science students! No stress! 😀
However, does everybody agree with this decision? Note that this decision was voted in unanimity. Sure its not a perfect decision but, i think its the best decision. To be fair to everybody. Nothing has been revealed on the NEW MARKING SCHEME.

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous ‘yes.’
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things—your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are th e other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.
The sand is everything else—the small stuff. ‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
‘Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house. the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked.’
The coffee just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.’

Hello everybody. Today im going to talk about something that happend on last wednesday(19/11/08). On a very famous radio station, a very particular emmision was “launched”. The idea behind this show was to reveal taboo subjects in mauritius and getting the comments of the listeners. On that day, the Topic was about “Male Prostitution in MRU”, there was even a guest(male prostitute) who was interviewed in real time. I dont know if the latter was in the studio or they were just conversion by phone. The fact is! This is a very delicate topic (basically thats the aim of the emision), and mauritians surely reacted. One of the teasing questions was “Why do you do this?”, and the latter answered “Because of financial problems”.
Some clearly rejected these type of radio-programmes. Several reasons were given :
Mo pa le mo zefant ecout sa ban kaliT emmision la. ( ENG : I do not want my child to listen to such programmes)
Bizin pa encourage ban dimoune ki ena problem financier al dan sa direction la.(ENG :MAN having financial problems should not be encouraged to go in this direction)
Kot nu p aler dan sa pays la? (lol.. yes yes.. for some people, this is a valid argument) (ENG : Where are we going in this country?? )
Topics like these should not be debated in public. Its just too sensible.
Someone even said : Prostitution is illegal, so the police should arrest the guy who was the “guest” of that programme, because he clearly admitted that he is a male prostitute and he even gave his name. That someone indeed had a point. 😛
Dear readers, this is how the majority of mauritians treat the taboo topics. but is this how they SHOULD deal with it? Aren’t we in a developing country? Should we continue to supress taboo topics or should we encourage radio-shows like these?
Share your opinion.
For those who intend to make usless comments, This article is not about debating “MALE prostitution/ right or wrong”. This article is about debating “TABOO topics in public”. Biase your comments taking this fact in mind. Thank you.

Well, I personally think MES is wasting time. It will never actually be able 2 trace all the leaks. Since last Thursday, “zot p passe facebook ek blackpapers au peigne fin”, still no results. Actually, they are coming up with the argument that some of the leaks were fake.. As we all know, internet is not the only means, they will never know about the info that travelled by mail, fax or phone. We cannot afford letting this take too long!
What I think should be done instead is that we refer the case to our embassies in all the 55 commonwealth countries, and ask them for a copy of the paper in the respective countries along with their time table (GMT). Then we eliminate those papers that started before we did, or else, in the situation that we had already started before they were done there. Thus, atleast we can know for sure which are the papers that couldn’t have been leaked at all.
Now, the very fact that we can compare the papers directly will produce a better assessment of the situation. After this, having seen that the papers are similar and done with a certain time delay, we should assume that leaks occurred, even if proofs were not obtained. We do not actually expect a student to come forward and say openly that he received the leaks otherwise than fb.
If we process things this way, the possibility of us resitting ALL the papers is considerably reduced and a decision can then be taken based on true facts! I wonder why nobody came up with this so far on radio.. :S
Another view: Did MES “officially” know that there was this time delay beforehand, and that the papers were similar? For that answer, I think we should analize our binding contract with CIE and see if any such thing was mentioned. If that was the case, GOVT of Mtius should never have agreed! Then the fault is ours; we will not b able to sue CIE for this. It is not even liable to pay for our resitting. Legally speaking, they will be able to protect themselves though we know the whole system is to be revised.

The final decision still remains unknown. I will keep updating.
Thats one of the first major decision taken after the leakage scandal. It has been announced that Cambridge will trackdown the cheaters and they are going to be penalised. I dont think tracking down the cheater can be pratically feasible! And i am 100% sure that all the cheaters cannot be retraced. In fact, there are some questions that travelled via emails, phone calls, sms. How will they track these??
About the Facebook group of Blackpapers.info, The profiles and pictures of those who participated int he discussion are they, but does this mean they are cheaters!?? does this mean these people didnt revise??? How can u differentiate between a genius and someone who cheated?
HOW ARE THEY GOING TO PROCEED???
No details have been reveaed about that. Sure that its going to be very diffucult. and innocents might get problems!
It is possible to retrace ppl using their IP address. Yes. but this involves a great deal of Privacy infridgement. MyT users have dynamic IP. It changes everytime you reset ur livebox. Without the help of the ISP(internet provider) its pratically impossible to traceback. supposed they managed to trace back the names of those internet connection owners who got access to those facebook groups or blackpapers forums, so what??? The names of their MOM OR DAD are thier, bot the name of the students! how are they going to knw who has a son/daughter sitting for exam!? Im still wondering!!
If Facebook collaborates will cambridge and hands over all details about the discssions that took place in those mini forums. Cambridge will get a very bad reputattion and ppl will feel UNSAFE in facebook. This will cause a major impact on Facebook’s popularity. not only in mauritius, but worldwide!
On the other hand, If Facebook doesnt collaborate, they dont loose anything, because i believe that they were NOT PROMOTING leakage. FB is just a platform for communication. just like any other.
FACEBOOK IS NOT THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THE PAPERS WERE LEAKED. (phone calls, emails, sms are also concerned.)
How are they going to track those cheaters????? IS our privacy at risk??? THERE’s absolutely no reason y facebook should be banned.
THE OTHER ugly PICTURE
The decision of tracking down cheaters. Whom does it benefit most??? Cambridge! of course. Whats the other alternative?? Make all the students resit and PAY FOR THEM!!! there’s no way all these students are going to pay again!! So who makes the loss?? yeah.. you got it… so whats the “profitable” solution?? track down cheaters! how???? NO IDEA!!
Waiting for more transparency about this topic. Share your view.s
NOTE : THE GOVERNMENT IS AGAINST THIS DECISION OF CAMBRIDGE!
UPDATE(01.35am 15/11/08) :
Article Written by Star03
I now think that these people are not cheaters as some of them did not know that the papers would be the same, they are being called so, because the real culprits need a scapegoat.
I think a resit is the solution, but the actual issue, is that can we attend the exams again? like me, i’m sure all other students are mentally exhausted… and we have forgotten most of what we revised! we need to relax, especially after two years of hardwork and sacrifices… HSC is once, why should we go through that all over again???
Even if the resit is in February or March, we will have study during the holidays, and some are planning to work to save money for their University courses, others are going abroad, others need to badly relax ,because of exams stress, i know many who’ve been sick…
Those who got the papers before will be tracked down, it means that those who did not, will be having their papers corrected like as if nothing happened, the threshold mark will not increase, or it won’t be done severely…
And going for a free resittin is extremely costly, CIE will not be able to pay for 10000 students…
its my opinion, now i don’t really know what will happen??
but i would like to know something, those who used the net, did not know they would be getting the same questions, what about those who use the phone or fax machine to communicate with their penpals or relatives who are abroad??? these students ARE actually cheating, they know that the papers will be the same!! these have been happening for years, i don’t understand why should FB or the students (called cheaters) be blamed for??
concerning those who reported, why did they do that after the xams only?? i read from one of the students who reported, saying that he got access to the information on the eve of the exams and he informed his friends, so they were in contact with papers too, they already knew what would come up too…
If they were really honest, they should have done so before the exams, a call would have been highly enough to start an inquiry, then if the facts were right the exams would have been stopped!
Now all the ‘big papers’ are over, we are somehow relaxed, because we can now enjoy the holidays, but its not the case….
And in 1981, the fact was that the real paper was leaked, it was not DISCUSSIONS! the real paper was actually out before the exams! that is why, cie had to conduct the exams again, but today, its the discussion going one between foreign students, who had previously sat for the papers, and by chance students from mauritius participated in their conversations, but is it really their fault??? i was totally against the cheaters, but now i know that most of them did not know it would be the same papers!!
i’m sure, we all thought that after the Singapore issue, every country would be having different papers, but now i came to know that its not the case….
try to think about that… i want justice too… but resittin just freaks me out… i’m not prepared yet and i’m far too tired… I KNOW I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE GOING THROUGH THIS…
The Decision has been taken. This article is being closed for comments. Pleaese proceed to the following article :
Hello friends.. i guess you all heard about the latest scandal. Many hsc papers were leaked! The fact is, there is a website (bl_ckp_pers.info). They provide past exam papers for download FREELY. Thats obviously a very good thing for all the students who wana practice(remember, past exam book have been banned in mauritius).
What happened is that exam papers from Maths, Physics,Chemistry and General Paper were available on the internet in the eve of the exam day. The facebook group of the site(bl_ckp_pers.info) was in great discussion about the questions. No one knew that these question would infact come out the next day. Hundreds of mauritian students had access to those papers before coming in the exam room. And the already disccussed their answers in the facebook group. It is said that they were having discussion with students from pakistan and singapore(whom i believe sat for the exam the previous day). These students realised that the same questions they worked out last nite was in front of them in the exam! (What a luck?? shud i say?)
I tried to find some of the discussions about the LEAKED papers, but as far as i knw they’ve been remove around noon today!
Thousands of students worked hard for two years and prepared for these papers!! and other got the answers before sitting for the papers! Thats pure injustice. Though YOU will agree that if YOU knew that these papers were available, YOU would have been tempted to view them. Thats “human”?? i guess so..
Now that these facts have been revealed, it the MES who’s in deep trouble. Students are manifesting. They dont want the paper to be cancelled just because and “handfull” of students cheated. Also, it wont be nice if those student who viewed these papers the previous day get their papers cancelled because they had no idea that these were infact leaked papers! Moreover, these papers(maths chem, phy, GP) are essential for those who are competing for scolarship!!!
Whats your opinion about this??
What should the MES/Cambridge/Ministre of Education do?
UPADTE : From what lichien Finnet said on the mbc newsflash. It seems that its NOT the papers itself that were leaked, but instead, students from Australia and New Zealand who already sat for those papers started a duscussion topic on facebook and share some of the questions that they remembered. Thats what happend. So now, i dont really knw why Blackpapers.info is into the picture.
Lichien Finnet declared that solutions are being sorted out and the verdict will be revealed soon.
